The nursery will gradually transition to an Agroforestry Model, where other trees will be grown alongside yerba mate trees. This approach benefits the entire ecosystem, as the additional trees provide shade to the mate trees, enabling the leaves to retain more nutrients and flavor. Furthermore, the extra organic material improves soil moisture and benefits other plant roots. The Agroforestry Model is increasingly recognized as a “holistic food production system” with significant environmental, economic, and social advantages. Intercropping helps diversify the plots, generate extra income for the project, and contribute to the reforestation of the area and the Atlantic rainforest.
